Nautilus Fisheries
North America ★ V|E|M|G|R|L ★ Vault Original

Welcome to Nautilus Fisheries! Opening in the mid 1850s as a tiny lobster cannery along the coast of Nova Scotia, the business grew over the years. It was one of the first canneries to expand at the turn of the century to include the processing of scallops, and eventually became one of the largest providers of seafood leaving magical Nova Scotia and travelling around the world. The dream of two brothers, it became a reality through hard work and determination, and is also one of the leading authorities on research in the fishing industry.

Nautilus Fisheries consists of a fleet of fishing vessels, a large processing plant, and a warehouse, all located just outside Halifax, Nova Scotia. The processing plant is on a large plot of land near the coast, and the warehouse is further inland, nestled in a clearing surrounded by trees. The buildings have an industrial look to them, and look like they should not be standing next to the forest, since they were originally built by Ordinary folk who sold them to the owners of Nautilus when they expanded their business.

Near the processing plant is a shipyard where the fishing vessels can leave and return. A smaller warehouse with supplies is situated near the shipyard. The processing plant smells constantly of fish, although curiously the smell never touches the administration buildings located just behind the plant.

In the Victorian and Expedition Eras, Nautilus Fisheries is known as Nautilus Cannery and consists of three vessels that fish lobster and scallops. They own a small processing plant along the coast of Nova Scotia, and the warehouse is attached to the plant. They are a much smaller operation than they are by the modern eras.

Nautilus Fisheries always has fishing vessels out in the Atlantic Ocean and Bay of Fundy, gathering lobster, scallops, and various fish. They pride themselves on being a fully East Coast fishery, selling to manufacturers throughout North America, and even to countries on other continents. However, there is talk of opening a partner company in British Columbia to take advantage of the West Coast fishing industry as well.

When a vessel returns with fish, the load is taken to the processing plant where everything is prepared according to the highest standards of quality. The seafood is cleaned, de-scaled and prepared for shipment. Thanks to magic, this process is a lot faster than in Ordinary fisheries. Nautilus is a provider of raw resources, not processed goods, so they ship to various companies. However, sometimes they receive private orders from individuals who wish to purchase seafood directly from the fishery rather than from a distributer or manufacturer. In this case, a sales representative from the company would meet with the client and take the order, and when a vessel comes in, the company would set aside the private order. Unless the order is excessively large, Nautilus will not deliver to private clients.

In modern eras, Nautilus Fisheries has added a research and development team, operating out of the administration office behind the processing plant. They focus on ocean sustainability and conservation, and even assist the Wizarding Expedition Society in their study of the Nova Scotia Seaserpent, with their fishermen observing the waters as they sail.
