“Smoke from the engine drifted over the heads of the chattering crowd, while cats of every color wound here and there between their legs. Owls hooted to one another in a disgruntled

sort of way over the babble and the scrapping of heavy trunks.”

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Business Overview

Welcome to Magical Railway Association! Connecting railroads and magical train services from across the world, this organization collectively manages hundreds of routes across multiple continents, making the rails the most exciting and favored way to travel for many witches and wizards. Though regulations vary from country to country, most routes include sleeper cars, observation cars, dining cars, and even the occasional dueling car, though magic used while the train is moving must be kept to a minimum. Train routes operate primarily out of non-magical stations on tucked away platforms, such as Platform 9 3/4 in England, which is perhaps most famous for being the primary boarding point for the Hogwarts Express.

Location

As an international union, the Railway Association has several major hubs throughout the world to manage routes and the day to day business of the various companies that coordinate trains in and out of the stations. North America boasts two hubs in both Chicago and New York City, though both serve vastly different routes due to their locations. In the United Kingdom, most of the railway coordination and connections are handled in London.

The largest European hub is located in Paris, where nearly every magical train route that traverses the continent will pass through at least once. Due to the busy nature of the Gare du Nord, it is very easy to hide non-magical trains and tracks and many magical persons even move through the platforms with ease while wearing robes, carrying strange birds, and displaying other such oddities because the crowds are often so large that no one pays any attention to the strangeness of magical folk who may be connecting through the station on their way to somewhere else.

Engine – Though there seems to be some debate as to whether or not coal or magic is primarily used to propel the trains, it is known for sure that all of the energy and the place for steering is in the engine at the very front.

Staff Car – All employees in charge of working on the trains are given their own expansive rooms, though these change from trip to trip as different employees are assigned to different routes. There is a community bathroom to be shared by all employees on this car, as well as a small lounge area.

Private Room Cars – Those willing to pay extra can have their own rooms on the train, each furnished with a bed (or two beds) and a small toilet. A hook on every ceiling allows travelers to hang owl cages if they have brought them with. This car, like the staff car, is two stories tall.

Passenger Cars – Those who do not wish to have their own rooms can book a normal seat on these cars.

Lounge Car – Furnished with overstuffed armchairs and pillows, passengers can come here to relax during their journey and purchase snacks.

Dining Car – Multi-course meals from cuisines all around the world are served in this car that feels more like a five star restaurant than a part of a train. Gentle music plays in the background, and all plates, cups, and utensils are charmed to sit upright in spite of the train rocking back and forth.

Menagerie – Though owls may be kept in private rooms, all other creatures and owls belonging to those traveling in the passenger cars must be kept in the menagerie, which is fully staffed at all times.
