“Bill was — there was no other word for it — cool. He was tall, with long hair that he had tied back in a ponytail. He was wearing an earring with what looked like a fang dangling from it. Bill’s clothes would not have looked out of place at a rock concert, except that Harry recognized his boots to be made, not of leather, but of dragon hide.”

Business Overview

Welcome to Kameoasa Harajuku Boutique! Opening shortly after the Harajuku fashion craze began in Japan in the 1980’s, head seamstress Fujiwara Hinako capitalized on the interests of the youth and began designing in the unique, colourful style mixing traditional Japanese attire with Western clothing. The designs may cost a fortune, especially with the amount of custom orders made, but the youth of Harajuku flock to the Boutique in droves to purchase the clothing that help them make a statement. All of the clothing is made in-house, and the boutique also supplies accessories such as wigs, stockings, and bonnets. Alternative fashion may be a niche market, but Kameoasa Harajuku Boutique is committed to the outlandish designs made to the highest quality.

Location

Located near the Harajuku station in Tokyo, Japan, Kameoasa Harajuku Boutique has a completely ordinary looking store front. Traditional kimonos are on display in the window, and the sign above the door has a simple, classic look to it. Upon entering the boutique, however, one is met with an array of colours and patterns. Displays are set up in the main room, showcasing current trends in Harajuku fashion, although there is a small emphasis on sweet lolita fashion.

The back room is where the magic happens… literally. Designers and seamstresses work tirelessly to come up with new designs and get to work on their magically enhanced sewing machines to produce outfits. Kameoasa also makes custom orders, and there is a small fitting room to the side. On the second floor is a large storeroom with designs carefully stored along with a massive inventory of accessories and wigs.

Designs
Kameoasa Boutique carries a large assortment of Harajuku fashion items, ranging from Sweet Lolita, Gothic Lolita, Visual Kei, and even punk rock. Each design is made by hand, using magically enhanced sewing machines, and custom orders are made to the smallest detail. Because of this, designs usually take 1-2 weeks to complete. Their designs are expensive, but the price reflects the amount of work that goes into each unique piece.

The manager makes an effort to hire youth who are involved in the Harajuku subculture to help run the Boutique. Teenagers and young adults are hired as shop clerks and even as junior seamstresses, and the Boutique even hires young fashion consultants who assist the designers in keeping up with the latest trends.

Kameoasa designs for both genders, as well as making androgynous clothing. They also make synthetic wigs in a variety of shades, both pastel and bright. These wigs are essential to the Harajuku fashion style, after all.
