“A glass case nearby held a withered hand on a cushion, a blood-stained pack of cards, and a staring glass eye. Evil-looking masks stared down from the walls, an assortment of human bones lay on the counter, and rusty, spiked instruments hung from the ceiling.”

– Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Situated in the less than savory Knockturn Alley, just off of Diagon Alley in London, England, this antiques shop is perhaps most known for it’s shady reputation… by those who know it at all. The dusty window displays don’t seem to carry anything particularly interesting, and in fact most people visiting Knockturn Alley for the first time might look right past it while making their way through the neighborhood.

Once inside the shop, which is housed in a crooked two-story building, one will find a number of different display cases sitting under the occasional blanket of dust, large furniture pieces, and other curiosities. Behind the front counter a door leads to a back room that has only ever been seen by employees, and those looking to enter without permission will not make it far thanks to the various charms and hexes set to prevent break-ins or larceny.

Inventory and Clientele

Often misunderstood as a purveyor of the dark arts, Borgin & Burkes is in fact a simple antiques shop which also deals in pawned items and resales. They do carry a large inventory of cursed items, however, though these are often sold off by their owners for being frustrating or inconvenient rather than illegal, and it is not uncommon for pawned items to not be quite as cursed as the owner claims… or in worst cases, they are even more cursed than the owner claims.

The shop’s reputation largely comes from the fact that its owners do not discern one customer from the next, and are willing to buy just about anything from just about anyone, especially if they think they can resell it to make a profit. This fact, paired with the fact that Knockturn Alley tends to attract persons of a shady reputation, means that quite a few dark or questionable witches and wizards have passed through the doors of Borgin & Burkes to sell off their belongings… or to purchase something particular.

Though the inventory at Borgin & Burkes is varied, they do have quite a few weapons, some of which date back centuries or come paired with suits of armor. They also sell a few wands that may have changed hands several times throughout the years, and a great number of enchanted items that would otherwise be ordinary if not for the spells cast on them, such as cabinets, jewelry, and more. They also have a sizable collection of rare and dark spellbooks available for purchase. If you are looking for something particular, the owners or shopkeeps are usually more than willing to take a note and send you an owl if they are able to locate your item.
